Helen Marquet

Curious about the world, its different cultures and its different concepts, I chose to study psychology, sociology and anthropology.

A few years later, I thought I would find my way when I was training to be a nurse. Caring for others was a value that was already well established. However, I interrupted this route because I felt that “something” was missing within hospitals.

I worked for several years, full of human discoveries, with autistic children and teenagers. A daily life requiring qualities such as empathy, non-judgment, listening, and consideration for others.

At the same time as my family was growing, I trained to play the cello and become a musician which was one of my greatest joys. I learnt about brain plasticity in practical terms, the work of my hands, the work of breathing, the development of sensoriality and the enormous potentiality of the body and the mind.

For several years now, learning meditation through Vipassana and practicing yoga have nourished this need for self-knowledge and the mechanisms of pain, where, almost naturally, but without forgetting some beautiful encounters, I decided to train in Shiatsu, which comes in answer to my initial questions.

Among all the styles of shiatsu, I chose Therashiatsu, which combines the Namikoshi and Masunaga styles; I also had the chance to practice in hospitals – Hôpital Nord (Marseille) with patients and Hôpital Saint-Joseph (Marseille) for medical staff – during my last year, in order to obtain the title of Shiatsu Specialist.

What is Shiatsu – SHI/fingers, ATSU/pressures?

Shiatsu is a form of massage therapy performed with the thumbs, fingers and palms, without the use of mechanical or other instruments, by applying pressure to the skin, in order to correct internal dysfunctions, improve and maintain health.
In Japan, shiatsu has been recognised as an independent massage practice since 1964 and has a state diploma.

Its history

One of the first approved schools was that of Tokujiro Namikoshi, who taught a shiatsu based on anatomical/physiological principles, close to osteopathy and spondylotherapy, leaving aside (officially!) any energetic principle. Later, Shizuto Masunaga reintegrated the energetic principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), based on the Yin Yang and the 5 Movements, in the shiatsu treatment protocols.

In 1997, the Lannoye-Collins law was voted in favourably at the European Parliament. In the framework of this law on non-conventional medicine, le shiatsu is one of the eight disciplines mentioned as effective and worthy of interest (like osteopathy or acupuncture – Report A4-0075/97); this report allowed the recognition, in France, of osteopathy.

In 2015, the SPS (Syndicat Professionnel de Shiatsu) obtained from the RNCP(French professional register), the registration of the title “Specialist in Shiatsu”.

To summarize, the term “shiatsu” is relatively recent but rooted in millennia-old principles… It is much more than a simple manual technique; shiatsu is an art of touch, a “non-verbal communication”, source of well-being and wellness.

Benefits, advantages, indications

Shiatsu energizes the vital functions and provides immediate relaxation.

It reduces stress, which is sometimes the cause of muscular pain, backache, anxiety, insomnia, generally leading to overall fatigue.

Shiatsu facilitates the free flow of energy, the KI (or QI in Chinese) and offers muscular, mental, emotional and relational relaxation to recover one’s natural defences.

Shiatsu is an accompaniment over several sessions, it is the regularity of the practice that allows a lasting well-being.

Shiatsu is practiced while dressed and lying on a futon (or shiatsu table) and has very few contraindications. Shiatsu is not a substitute for Western medicine, but a complement to it. It does not dispense with medical advice.
